Haiti March 7, 2015

The moment we stepped off the plane in Port au Prince, it didn’t seem quite real that we were actually here. We have anticipated this trip for 5 months. The airport was quite chaotic, but once we made it to Gabriel (the big truck) we were all much calmer. Gabriel took us right through the streets of Port au Prince – a crazy ride, but still so beautiful. It took us at least 2 hours to get to the top of the mountain where we are staying. The ride was very bumpy; being able to see God’s beautiful creation surrounding us made it so much better. Considering this is my first time coming here, I had no idea what to expect. People can tell you stories about what they have experienced, but it still won’t be enough to prepare you for the things you will see – it is truly something you have to see for yourself. We were all so tired from all the traveling, but we still managed to have a small devotion before bedtime. David Moss led it, and he spoke about how God has created everything in His own image, He has made all things beautiful. It was something I needed to be reminded of as we are here to love on the people in Haiti.

This morning we were able to walk around through the little villages in the mountains, which was really cool, and see up close and personal the needs of these people. They are sick, hungry, and yet they are still okay. The little kids enjoyed this – they were with us the whole time. This one little boy, Blanco, came out of nowhere and held my hand the entire time as we walked. The first thing he said to me was, “You are my friend.” As we were walking I was just thinking about how good we have it, how truly blessed we are even as middle-class Americans. We are TRULY blessed. The Lord reminded me as Blanco was holding my hand and walking with me everywhere we went, that this is exactly what He wants from us. He wants a friend. He wants us to trust Him and let Him lead us through the mountains and the valleys. He wants to hold us in His hands and carry us through. We just have to be willing to let go and walk with Him.

I am anxious to see how the Lord will work through us all in the days to come. I know that there may be trials, but James 1:2-3 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work, so that you may be mature, and complete, not lacking anything.” We will get through this week and it will be beautiful because we have relied on God, and Him alone, to help us serve and love the people of the valley of Z’Orange.
