The Rice and Beans 5K Rumble is a family friendly 5K run/walk to benefit Truth Evangelistic Ministry and its efforts to support the people of Haiti.
The course is flat and shady through the neighborhoods around Truth Evangelistic Ministry.
Saturday May 10 dawned without the forecast and the thunderstorms. Race volunteers explained the unexpected weather in one word: “prayer.” Months of preparation came to fruition as tables, tents, chairs and timing equipment went up around the Truth Evangelistic Ministries building. Runners and walkers began to arrive as music played over the area. The 4th about to begin.
The phrase “Run Hungry” encapsulates the objective of the race: To raise funds to feed Haitian people who would otherwise do without. A sign in the registration area explained why participants run hungry.
Runners have the opportunity to share a typical Haitian discomfort, an empty stomach. Participants who choose this option receive an armband. In addition, an extra donation is made in their name to feed a hungry Haitian.
This year’s race boasted 151 preregistered runners and walkers, as well as 39 same day registrants, for a total of 190. Race director Ken Lawrence introduced a free kids race this year. 25 children participated in the mile and half mile runs.
Money raised from the race after basis costs goes directly to the ministry of Haiti. Costs are minimal because volunteers supply manpower, food, and signs. A table near the registration offered items from many of the countries that Truth Evangelistic Ministries visit.
Though the day turned out to be very humid, most runners enjoyed running the course through the neighborhood behind Wright Baptist Church. Knowing that the registration fees contributed to the welfare of someone in Haiti, some runners were inspired to give an added donation. Bystanders and family members cheered on participants until the last walker came to the finish line.
Continuing with the theme of the race, rice and beans were served as an after race meal, along with barbecue pulled pork sandwiches. Also available were a myriad of homemade desserts, water and Gatorade. Portions were generous, and extra meat was sold to further benefit the ministry.
Cheering ensued as awards were handed out. Each person who placed received a hand-carved statue from Haiti as a reminder. The sun came out from behind the clouds as volunteers began to clean up after a very successful fundraiser.
Over $6000 was raised for the Haitian people!
The Rice & Beans Rumble is a 5K run/walk benefiting Truth Evangelistic Ministries (TEM), a Fort Walton Beach Christian organization that has been ministering to the needs of Haitians for over 10 years.
